The proposed project aims at validating and establishing a sustainable process for bioplastics production through use of microalgae, in the framework of a biorefinery approach which includes: wastewater treatment and complete valorization of the produced microalgal biomass towards biodegradable polymers, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), natural pigments and bioenergy, in the form of biogas.
Through the implementation of the proposed Project, various environmental and biotechnological issues are expected to be addressed, concurrently providing scientific feedback for large‐scale application of an integrated process associated with anaerobic digestion units and bioplastics technology.
